Predictive vs Progressive vs Power Dialer

But choosing the right dialing mode is one of the most impactful decisions an outbound operations manager makes. Preview Dialer
How it works: The dialer presents the next contact record to the agent before placing the call. The agent reviews the contact's information — name, account history, notes from previous calls, case details — and decides when to initiate the call. The agent clicks a button to dial, and the system places a single call.
Throughput: Lowest of all four modes. Agents spend significant time reviewing records between calls. Typical throughput: 15-25 calls per agent per hour, depending on how long agents spend on preview and how much account research they need to do.
Compliance risk: Lowest. The agent has full control over when and whether to dial. There are zero abandoned calls because the system never dials without an available agent. No over-dialing means no risk of exceeding abandon rate thresholds.
Best for:
- High-value B2B sales: When each call requires preparation and personalization. The agent needs to know the prospect's company, role, previous interactions, and pain points before speaking.
- Complex collections: High-balance accounts where the agent needs to review payment history, dispute status, and negotiation notes before making contact.
- Regulated callbacks: When compliance requires that an agent review consent status, time zone, and attempt history before dialing.
- Skip tracing follow-ups: When new contact information needs to be verified or contextualized before the call.

Power Dialer
How it works: The dialer automatically places one call at a time per agent. When an agent becomes available (after completing the previous call and disposition), the system immediately dials the next number in the list. The agent doesn't preview the record beforehand — the contact information appears when the call connects.
Throughput: Moderate. Eliminates the preview time between calls but still dials one-to-one (one call per agent). Typical throughput: 40-60 calls per agent per hour, depending on answer rates and talk time.
Compliance risk: Low. Because the system dials one call per available agent, there's no over-dialing and therefore no abandoned calls from pacing. The abandon rate from the dialing mode itself is effectively zero. (Abandoned calls can still occur if an agent disconnects or logs out while a call is ringing, but this is operational, not systemic.)
Best for:
- Small teams (under 10 agents): Predictive dialing doesn't work well with small teams because the algorithm needs statistical mass to predict agent availability. Power dialing gives small teams automation without the risks of over-dialing.
- Compliance-sensitive campaigns: When you need to guarantee zero abandoned calls from the dialer but still want automatic dialing (no agent-initiated calls).
- Call-back campaigns: When you're working through a list of people who requested a callback and every connection is valuable.

Throughput: Moderate-high. By overlapping dialing with wrap-up time, progressive mode eliminates the dead time between calls. Typical throughput: 50-80 calls per agent per hour, depending on wrap-up duration and answer rates.
Compliance risk: Low-moderate. Progressive dialing does create a small abandon risk: if a call is answered during wrap-up but the agent takes longer than expected to finish, the connected party waits briefly. Well-implemented progressive dialers manage this by not dialing until wrap-up is nearly complete and by connecting the call to the agent immediately if wrap-up finishes early.
Best for:
- Mid-sized teams (10-30 agents): Large enough to benefit from the efficiency gain over power mode but potentially too small for effective predictive pacing.

Predictive Dialer
How it works: The dialer uses statistical algorithms to predict when agents will become available and pre-dials multiple numbers in advance. The over-dial ratio (calls placed per available agent) is continuously adjusted based on real-time metrics: current answer rate, average talk time, average wrap-up time, and the number of agents in various states (talking, wrapping, idle).
