What Is a WebRTC Softphone?

WebRTC is the technology that lets a browser send and receive live audio and video without a plugin. Applied to a contact center, it removes the two most tedious parts of deploying agents: buying and provisioning desk phones, and installing and updating a softphone client on every machine. The agent opens a URL, signs in, and the phone is there.

That convenience is why browser calling has become the default for contact centers rather than an alternative to it, and it matters most for the operations that scale unevenly. A SIP softphone is an application installed on the machine that speaks SIP directly to the platform. A WebRTC softphone runs inside the browser, using the browser's own media stack for audio, so there is nothing to install or update on the agent's computer. Both end up carrying the same call; the difference is entirely in how the agent gets to it.

Do agents need a headset?

Yes, and it is the single component most worth spending money on. The browser handles echo cancellation and noise suppression reasonably well, but neither compensates for a laptop microphone picking up an open-plan floor. A wired USB headset avoids both the room and the battery problems that come with wireless.

What network does a WebRTC softphone need?

Less bandwidth than people expect and more stability than they plan for. Voice is a small, continuous stream, so the numbers that matter are jitter and packet loss rather than raw speed. A shared connection that runs video calls comfortably can still produce poor call audio if it bursts, which is why call quality should be measured rather than assumed.

Is browser calling secure?

WebRTC media is encrypted by design, and the signalling runs over a secure connection, so the leg between the agent's browser and the platform is protected without extra configuration. The parts worth attention are the ones around it: who can log in, what they can see, and whether the device itself is managed.

What happens to a call if the browser tab is refreshed?

That depends on the platform, and it is worth testing before you deploy. A well-behaved agent application avoids reloading itself during a call and warns the agent before a navigation that would drop one. Losing a live conversation to an accidental refresh is a small technical detail with a large operational cost.
