AI debt collection
AI debt collection: AI voice agents for payment reminders, with people for the hard calls
Let an AI voice agent place the routine reminder calls, send the payment link and book the callback. Keep disputes, hardship, vulnerable customers and every negotiation with your trained agents, on the same platform, the same lists and the same pre-dial checks.

Quick answer
What is AI debt collection? It is using an AI voice agent for the routine parts of collections: due-date reminder calls, payment-link follow-up by SMS or WhatsApp, and callback scheduling. Disputes, hardship, vulnerable customers and negotiation stay with human agents, and the AI hands those calls over. On DialerBee, outbound calls pass compliance-supporting checks for DNC, consent, calling hours and frequency at the dial, and the AI voice agent costs $0.60 per started connected minute on managed AI.

What it does today
What can an AI voice agent do in collections?
An AI collections agent earns its minutes on calls that are short, scripted and repeated thousands of times a month. These are the parts DialerBee's AI voice agent, Layla, handles.
Due-date reminder calls
Point the AI voice agent at a contact list and run it as an outbound campaign, with the same list and pacing machinery your human campaigns use. Short, scripted reminders are what it is for.
Payment-link follow-up
After the call, the agent follows up by SMS or WhatsApp. Your templates can carry a payment link and other merge fields pulled from your CRM or uploaded list, so the amount and the link arrive in writing.
Callbacks it places itself
When a customer asks to be called another time, the AI voice agent can place the callback itself, without tying up a seat.
Handing the call to a person
The agent hands off to a human agent. In collections that is the most important thing it does: the moment a call needs judgement, it should be with your team.
A result for every call
Every AI call leaves the recording, the transcript and the outcome, pushed into your CRM, so the AI call sits in the same customer history as the agent calls.
Limits and kill switches
Capacity and governance limits, number exceptions and a reminder policy are set in Agent Studio before a campaign starts. Kill switches stop one agent, one campaign or all AI calling.
What we do not claim
We do not describe the AI voice agent as verifying a customer's identity, reading balances or account records, taking payments, or agreeing a promise-to-pay. Design your campaign around that: keep amounts in the written follow-up, and let an agent confirm and log any promise-to-pay from the disposition panel.
The split
Which collection calls should AI make, and which should a person make?
The rule we recommend: the AI reminds, follows up and schedules. A person handles anything that involves a dispute, hardship, vulnerability or a negotiation.
| Situation | AI voice agent | Human agent | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Due-date reminder before or on the due date | Yes: short scripted call | If the customer asks for a person | Routine, repeatable, low risk when scripted |
| Sending the payment link | Yes: SMS or WhatsApp follow-up from your template | Not needed | The written link is clearer than reading details aloud |
| Customer asks to be called later | Yes: notes the time and places the callback | If the callback needs an agent | A scheduling task, not a negotiation |
| Customer proposes a date to pay | Takes the details and hands off | Agent confirms and logs the promise-to-pay | Promise-to-pay is logged by agents in the disposition panel |
| Customer disputes the debt | No: hands off on first mention | Yes, every time | Needs a trained person and your dispute process |
| Customer says they cannot pay (hardship) | No: hands off on first mention | Yes, every time | Needs empathy, judgement and your hardship policy |
| Signs of vulnerability (illness, bereavement, distress, confusion) | No: hands off | Yes, every time | Your vulnerable-customer policy decides the next step |
| Payment plans, settlements, discounts | No | Yes, within your authority levels | Negotiation is a human job |
| Questions about the balance or the account | No: hands off | Yes, after your own verification | We do not describe the AI as reading account records |
| Someone other than the customer answers | Offers a callback, shares no account details | If your process requires it | Keep account details out of the AI's script |
General guidance, not legal or regulatory advice. Your own policies and the rules that apply to you decide which calls a person must handle.
The handoff rule
When must the AI hand a collections call to a person?
On first mention of a dispute, hardship, illness, bereavement, distress or confusion; when the customer asks for a person; when they want to discuss a plan, a settlement or the balance; and when they ask you to stop calling.
Write these as rules before launch, not judgement calls left to the model. The AI should not try to persuade, repeat the demand, or ask a second time. It acknowledges, and it passes the call on.
If nobody is free, the AI offers a callback at a time the customer chooses. A supervisor can also listen live to an AI call and take it over.
A request to stop calling must reach your team so it is recorded. Once consent is revoked in DialerBee, the revoke stops the next dial.

Sample handoff lines
A sample script to adapt, not a recording.
Customer: “I lost my job. I can't pay this month.”
AI: “I'm sorry to hear that. This is something a member of our team should talk through with you, so I'm going to pass you to them now.”
Customer: “That isn't my debt. I already paid it.”
AI: “Thank you for telling me. I'll pass this to our team so a person can look into it with you.”
Customer: “My husband passed away last month, and the account was his.”
AI: “I'm very sorry for your loss. I'm going to connect you with a member of our team who can help with this properly.”
Customer: “Can I speak to a real person?”
AI: “Of course. I'm transferring you now.”
Customer: “Can I pay half now and half next month?”
AI: “I can't agree a plan on this call, but a member of our team can. Let me pass you to them.”
Hear it
What does an AI reminder call sound like?
We have not published a collections recording. The closest real example is an outbound appointment reminder: the same shape of call, where the customer cannot make the date, asks for another, and the AI passes the request to the team instead of deciding it alone.
Appointment reminder, rescheduled

Layla's replies were generated by the production Layla model from saved agent settings. The caller is a synthetic voice and the clinic is fictional: no real call or customer, and not a collections call.
A payment reminder script to adapt
Sample script, not a recording. Have your counsel review any required disclosures.
AI: “Hello, this is Layla calling from [company]. Am I speaking with [first name]?”
Customer: “Yes.”
AI: “I'm calling about a payment due on [due date]. I can send you a secure payment link by WhatsApp or SMS now. Would that help?”
Customer: “Send it by WhatsApp. I'll pay on Friday.”
AI: “Thank you. I'll send the link now and pass your note about Friday to our team. Have a good day.”
Notice what is missing: no balance read aloud, no pressure, no plan agreed. The amount and the link go in the written follow-up; the Friday note goes to an agent.
Before the dial
What should be checked before an automated collection call is dialled?
An automated campaign repeats a mistake in its rules on every call it places, so the rules matter more, not less. DialerBee applies compliance-supporting controls at the dial, not only when a list is uploaded:
| Do-not-call | DNC and DNCR list checks before the number is dialled. |
|---|---|
| Consent | Consent tracking with revoke, so a withdrawn consent stops the next dial. |
| Calling hours | Calling windows per jurisdiction and the time zone of the person being called. |
| Frequency | Frequency and retry limits on how often the same person is tried. |
| CLI ownership | The caller ID presented must be one you are verified to own. |
Jurisdiction packs cover UAE TDRA, KSA CST, Jordan TRC and Bahrain TRA, with configurable controls for TCPA, GDPR and other frameworks and append-only audit logging. In your demo, ask to see a dial blocked on an AI campaign, so you know the checks behave the same for the AI as for your agents.
Collections rules apply on top of general calling rules. In the US, for example, Regulation F (12 CFR 1006), which implements the FDCPA, says that for a debt collector “a time before 8:00 a.m. and after 9:00 p.m. local time at the consumer's location is inconvenient” (§ 1006.6), and sets a call-frequency presumption: no more than seven calls within seven consecutive days, and none within seven days after a telephone conversation about the debt (§ 1006.14(b)(2)). Sources: Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, checked October 2026.
Whether these rules apply to you depends on who you are and what you collect, and other countries have their own. Check your obligations with counsel, then set the calling hours and frequency limits to match. Start with our FDCPA guide for collections calling and compliance controls.
These are compliance-supporting controls. DialerBee does not provide legal advice or guarantee regulatory compliance.
Pricing
How much do AI payment reminder calls cost?
The AI voice agent is a usage-billed add-on on Professional ($129 per agent per month) and Enterprise, at $0.60 per started connected minute on managed AI. With your own model keys, a flat monthly fee replaces the per-minute rate. Carrier minutes are billed by your carrier.
Worked example: payment reminders
Five agents take the callbacks; the AI places 4,000 reminder calls, 2 minutes each.
| 5 Professional seats × $129 | $645 |
|---|---|
| 4,000 calls × 2 min = 8,000 min | 8,000 min |
| 8,000 min × $0.60 | $4,800 |
| Total a month, before carrier minutes | $5,445 |
Two things move this number. Billing is per started connected minute, so a reminder that runs to 2 minutes 10 seconds counts as 3: keep the script short and put the details in the written follow-up. And the five seats are not optional: they are who takes the disputes, hardship calls and promise-to-pay conversations the AI hands over. An example, not a quote. Getting started
How do you start AI collections calling safely?
Pick one early-stage segment
Start with accounts approaching or just past the due date. Leave later-stage, disputed and hardship-flagged accounts with your agents.
Write the script and the handoff rules first
Keep the reminder under two minutes, keep balances out of the spoken script, and write down every phrase that must send the call to a person.
Set the limits before the first dial
Calling hours, frequency limits, number exceptions and governance limits, configured per jurisdiction. Ask your counsel which rules apply to you.
Staff the handoffs
The AI frees seats, it does not remove them. Someone has to take the hardship calls, the disputes and the promise-to-pay conversations it passes on.
Listen to calls, not just the dashboard
Read transcripts where the customer hung up or the AI did not hand off. A supervisor can listen live to an AI call and take it over.
Widen only on evidence
Compare complaints, handoff rate and payments against the same segment worked by people before adding more accounts.
Be honest about fit
When is an AI voice agent the wrong choice for collections?
Running a remote collections floor? See virtual call center software. Moving off a legacy collections dialer? See the VICIdial alternative guide.
- Late-stage and disputed portfolios. Most calls become negotiations or disputes, so most would be handed off anyway. Use agents on a predictive dialer with AI AMD instead.
- Small volumes. If your agents already reach every account in time, AI minutes add cost without freeing anyone.
- When nobody is free to take the handoffs. An AI that passes a hardship call to an empty queue is worse than no AI.
- When the call must read the account. If your reminder only works with balances and account details spoken aloud after verification, keep it with agents.
Does it work in my customers' language?
The AI voice agent handles Arabic as dialects, including Gulf, Levantine and Egyptian, plus English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Hindi, Urdu, Portuguese and Indonesian: 11 languages. The voice is Layla, a female voice, and the customer can interrupt: the agent stops and listens. It is the same agent that runs the AI receptionist. See the Arabic AI voice agent.
Collections calls carry personal and financial details. Each tenant's data is isolated, recordings are served through signed links that expire, and customer call data is not used to train shared cross-tenant models by default. Details on the trust center.
