Quick answer
What can an AI agent do for customer service? A good AI voice agent answers routine calls, answers questions from your own documents, books, moves or cancels appointments, runs reminder calls, and hands anything complex or sensitive to a person. On DialerBee it works in 11 languages, quotes only catalogue prices, checks every sentence against guardrails before speaking, and costs $0.60 per started connected minute on managed AI, added to a Professional or Enterprise plan.
Definition
What is an AI agent in customer service?
"AI agent" is used for many things, from a chat widget on a website to a model that writes code. In customer service it means software that holds a conversation with a customer and does something: answers the question from your information, books the appointment, confirms the reminder, or passes the customer to the right person.
The difference from older automation is the conversation. An IVR makes callers fit its menu; a script reads the same lines to everyone. An AI agent lets the customer say what they want in their own words, asks a follow-up when it needs one, and stops talking when it is interrupted.
DialerBee's AI agents are voice agents. They answer and place phone calls inside the contact center, beside your queues and human agents, and send follow-ups by SMS or WhatsApp. They are not a text chatbot: web chat, email and Telegram conversations in the DialerBee inbox are handled by your team. For the wider vocabulary, see what is an AI voice agent and what is conversational AI.
The jobs
What can an AI agent do for your customers?
Nine jobs the DialerBee AI voice agent does today, inbound and outbound. Each is a capability of the live product, not a roadmap item.
Answer inbound calls
A number in your DID inventory routes to the AI voice agent the way it would route to a queue or an IVR. The caller hears your persona, not a menu.
Book, move and cancel appointments
The agent checks free-busy on the connected calendar, then books, reschedules or cancels on the call. It tells the caller a booking is made only once the system confirms it.
Answer questions from your documents
Opening hours, services, policies, directions. Answers come from documents you upload to the knowledge base, retrieved by semantic search.
Quote only your real prices
The price-truth guard means only prices in your service catalogue can be spoken. If a price is not in the catalogue, the agent does not invent one.
Run outbound AI campaigns
Point the agent at a contact list for scripted calls such as appointment reminders and confirmations, using the same list and pacing machinery as your human campaigns.
Place its own callbacks
An AI callback the agent places itself, so a promise made on the first call is kept without tying up a seat.
Hand the caller to a person
When the call needs a human, the agent hands off to a human agent in your queues on the same platform. A designed branch, not a failure state.
Follow up by SMS or WhatsApp
A confirmation or follow-up goes out after the call on SMS or WhatsApp, matched to the voice the caller heard.
Leave a result behind
Every AI call leaves the recording, the transcript and the outcome, pushed into your CRM, so the AI call sits in the same customer history as the human ones.
The full capability list, with transcripts, is on the AI voice agent page. Customer surveys (CSAT and NPS) are a separate feature, reached from a survey node in the IVR builder, not a job for the AI agent.

What does an AI phone agent sound like?
AI voice agent demo — simulated caller. Layla's replies come from the production model; the callers are synthetic voices and the businesses are fictional. No real call or customer.

AI voice agent demo — simulated caller
The agent confirms the service, day and time back to the caller before closing.

AI and people
How do AI agents work with human agents?
An AI agent that cannot pass work to people just moves the problem. On DialerBee the AI and your team share one platform: the same numbers, queues, customer history and reports.
- 1
The number routes to the AI
Each number in your DID inventory routes to a queue, a person, an IVR flow, a campaign or the AI voice agent. You choose which numbers the AI answers.
- 2
The AI takes the routine part
Questions from your knowledge base, catalogue prices, bookings after a free-busy check, reminders and confirmations.
- 3
The handoff
Complaints, exceptions and any caller who asks for a person are handed to a human agent in your queues, which route by FIFO, round-robin, longest-idle or skills.
- 4
Supervisors can step in
A supervisor can listen live to the AI agent's calls and take over a call. On human agents' calls, they can listen, whisper or barge in.
- 5
The human gets help too
Live transcription, suggestions during the call and live translation help the human agent follow and finish the call.
- 6
One history afterwards
The AI call's recording, transcript and outcome are pushed into your CRM and sit beside the human calls, and every call can be scored automatically.

Compared
AI agent vs IVR vs chatbot vs human agent
Four ways to handle a customer contact. Most contact centers end up using more than one.
| AI voice agent | Traditional IVR | Text chatbot | Human agent | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How the caller talks to it | Speaks naturally and can interrupt (barge-in) | Presses keys or says a menu word | Types in a chat window | Speaks naturally |
| Channel | Phone, with SMS or WhatsApp follow-up | Phone | Website or messaging app | Any channel your team covers |
| Completes a task on the call | Yes, within what you connect: bookings, reschedules, cancellations | Only fixed paths you built, such as a booking check node | Depends on what it is connected to | Yes, including exceptions |
| Answers open questions | From your uploaded documents | No, only recorded prompts | From whatever it was given | From knowledge and judgement |
| Hours | Whenever the number is routed to it | Always on | Always on | Your staffed hours |
| Languages | 11 on DialerBee, Arabic as dialects | One recording per language | Varies by product | Whatever your staff speak |
| Handles complaints and sensitive calls | Should not; hands them to a person | No | Should not | Yes, this is their job |
| Cost shape | Per minute ($0.60 per started connected minute on DialerBee managed AI) | Usually part of the phone platform | Varies by product | Salary and a seat per person |
| Main weakness | Can mishear; limited to what you connect and upload | Callers must fit the menu | Not on the phone, where many customers still call | One call at a time, staffed hours only |
A qualitative comparison of categories, not of named vendors; individual products vary. The AI voice agent column describes DialerBee. More detail in conversational IVR vs AI voice agent and AI receptionist vs IVR vs answering service.
Honest limits
Where do AI agents fail?
Every AI agent fails on some calls, ours included. What matters is that it fails safely: by handing over, not by guessing.
It mishears
Noise, a bad line, a strong accent or a caller switching between Arabic and English mid-sentence can all cause a wrong word. That is why the agent confirms what it heard ("so you'd like Thursday at 4?") before it acts, and why you should test in your callers' real dialect, not a clean studio voice.
It does not know the answer
The agent answers from the documents you upload. If the answer is not there, a good agent says so and offers a person or a callback; it should not improvise. Gaps in your knowledge base show up as handoffs, so read the handoff reasons every week.
The task needs a system it cannot reach
The agent books against a connected calendar and answers from your documents. For order status, balances or anything needing a back-office lookup, plan a handoff to a person or an IVR flow with a CRM lookup node, and check on a demo exactly what the agent itself can see.
The caller needs judgement or comfort
Complaints, disputes, bereavement, a frightened caller, anything that sounds like an emergency, and medical, legal or financial advice are not AI calls. Route them to people from day one.
Nobody is free to take the handoff
A handoff into an empty queue is worse than no handoff. Set a maximum wait, offer a callback, and decide what happens out of hours before you launch.
It was set up for a different job
Listen to the clinic demo below: the agent was not set up to book there, so it takes a callback request instead of pretending. That is the right failure. The wrong one is an agent that says "booked" when nothing was saved.
Plainly, DialerBee's own limits: the agent speaks with one voice, Layla (female); SOC 2 Type II is planned, not held; and self-serve sign-up needs your own SIP trunk or PBX.
Guardrails
How do you keep an AI customer service agent from saying the wrong thing?
With controls that act before the caller hears anything, and a stop button your own supervisor holds.
Guardrails before speech
Every candidate sentence passes guardrails before it is turned into speech, so what reaches the caller has been checked first, not filtered afterwards.
Catalogue-only prices
The price-truth guard limits spoken prices to your service catalogue. No plausible-sounding number a customer will later hold you to.
Actions confirmed before they are spoken
A booking, a change or a cancellation must return a confirming status from the system before the agent tells the caller it is done.
Kill switches you hold
Stop one agent, one campaign or all AI calling from your own console, at the scope you choose. Not a support ticket.
Limits set before the first call
Capacity and governance limits, numbers the agent must never call, and a reminder policy are settings in Agent Studio, so an AI campaign cannot outrun your team or your budget.
Your data stays yours
AI features are optional and off by default. Customer call data is not used to train shared cross-tenant models by default, and each tenant is isolated with PostgreSQL row-level security.
Outbound calling on DialerBee runs behind compliance-supporting controls applied at the dial: do-not-call checks, consent, calling hours and frequency limits. DialerBee does not provide legal advice or guarantee regulatory compliance. Data practices are on the trust center.
AI agent platform
How do you build and change the agent? Agent Studio
You build the agent in your own console, not by sending a vendor a document and waiting. Agent Studio is where the agent is configured, tested, published and governed.
| Persona | Name, voice, gender, tone and pace. The voice is Layla, the female DialerBee voice. |
| Knowledge | Upload documents; the agent answers from them by semantic search. Change the document, change what it knows. |
| Templates | Start from an industry template instead of an empty form, or build from your own documents and calls. |
| Flow profiles | Shape the conversation, so one knowledge base can serve an agent that books and one that only confirms. |
| Tests | Try the agent in the test simulator, then place test calls and listen. The ear is the acceptance test. |
| Versions | Every publish is a version. Promote the one you want live, roll back when a change made it worse. |
| A/B experiments | Run two versions against real traffic and read which one performed. |
| Live supervision | Listen live to the agent's calls and take over a call when needed. |
Industry templates are available in 9 of the 11 supported languages. See Agent Studio for every control.
Languages
Which languages can the AI agent speak?
Eleven: English, Arabic, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Turkish, Hindi, Urdu, Portuguese and Indonesian. Arabic is handled as dialects, including Gulf, Levantine and Egyptian, rather than one flattened Arabic, and the agent says times naturally in Arabic. If your callers mix languages or speak a dialect not listed, test it on a demo in the mix your customers actually use.

Pricing
How much does an AI agent cost on DialerBee?
Managed AI
$0.60
per started connected minute, usage-billed add-on
Your own model keys
Flat fee
a monthly platform fee replaces the per-minute rate; your provider bills you
Plans
$129
per agent per month on Professional; Enterprise custom
The AI voice agent is available on Professional and Enterprise. "Per started minute" means a call of 2 minutes 10 seconds bills 3 minutes, $1.80, so short, focused calls cost less. Carrier minutes are billed by your carrier; annual billing saves 20%; 14-day free trial, no card.
Worked example: an 8-person customer service team adds an AI agent
The team keeps 8 Professional seats for handoffs and complex calls. The AI agent takes 2,000 routine calls a month (bookings, opening hours, reminders), each billed at 2 started minutes. Prices are DialerBee's published rates; the outcome counts are illustrative, to show the arithmetic.
8 Professional seats
8 × $129 = $1,032
AI minutes
2,000 × 2 = 4,000
AI cost
4,000 × $0.60 = $2,400
Seats + AI a month
$3,432
| Resolved by the AI, confirmed in the calendar or system of record (illustrative) | 1,200 |
| Handed to a person (illustrative) | 600 |
| Unresolved: hung up, or needs a follow-up (illustrative) | 200 |
| Handoff rate: 600 ÷ 2,000 | 30% |
| AI cost per AI-resolved call: $2,400 ÷ 1,200 | $2.00 |
The $2.00 is before carrier minutes and before your team's time on the 600 handoffs. Add both, then compare the total with what the same 2,000 calls cost you today. The 200 unresolved calls are not savings; if they call back, count them again. An example, not a quote. Work through your own numbers in AI voice agent pricing: the real cost per resolved call or the call center cost calculator, and see every plan on pricing.

How should you start with an AI agent?
- 1
Pick one or two routine call types
Bookings, opening hours or reminders, where the right answer already exists in a calendar or a document.
- 2
Write down what success means
A booking in the calendar counts as resolved. The AI saying "done" does not. Decide your handoff rules before launch.
- 3
Build and test
Start from an industry template, upload your documents and catalogue, set the handoff queue and limits, then test in the simulator and on real test calls in your callers' language.
- 4
Go live on one number or one campaign
Listen live to the first calls, review every handoff, and keep the kill switches to hand.
- 5
Measure, then decide
Compare verified resolutions, handoff rate and cost per resolved call with your baseline. Publish a new version, roll back, widen or stop.
