How Much Does an AI Receptionist Cost? 2026 Prices, Hidden Fees and Real Examples
AI receptionist cost in 2026: flat, per-minute and per-call pricing, hidden fees, cost per resolved call, and worked examples for 100, 300 and 1,000 calls.
Quick answer
An AI receptionist for a small business usually costs between about $49 and $300 a month on published plans, priced by included minutes, by calls or per minute, plus carrier, overage and setup charges. A full-time US receptionist costs roughly $4,525 a month with benefits. On DialerBee, 300 calls a month comes to about $489 before carrier minutes. The number that matters is the cost per resolved call, not the monthly fee.
If you run a clinic, salon, law office or service business, you probably searched this because the phone rings when nobody can pick up. You want to know what an AI receptionist will cost each month, what the vendor's pricing page leaves out, and whether it really beats hiring someone or paying an answering service.
This guide answers those questions with prices taken from vendors' own pricing pages (checked October 2026), public salary data, and three worked monthly examples with every assumption shown. We sell an AI receptionist too, and our per-minute rate is not the cheapest. We show it anyway, and explain when a cheaper plan is the better choice.
How Much Does an AI Receptionist Cost per Month?
For a small business taking a few hundred calls a month, published AI receptionist plans mostly fall between $49 and $300 a month. That is the subscription. Your real bill also depends on how many minutes or calls you use beyond the allowance, how you connect a phone number, and how much staff time goes into calls the AI hands over.
Here is what several providers publish. These are their own list prices, not ours, and they change often, so check the linked page before you decide.
| Provider (pricing page) | Pricing model | Published price, checked October 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Rosie | Monthly plan with included minutes | $49 for 250 minutes; $149 for 1,000; $299 for 2,000 |
| My AI Front Desk | Monthly plan plus per-minute overage | $99 a month ($79 billed annually) for 200 minutes, then $0.25 a minute |
| Goodcall | Monthly plan by unique callers, no minute metering | $79 for 100 unique customers, then $0.79 each; $129 for 500, then $0.26; $299 for 2,000, then $0.15 |
| Smith.ai AI Receptionist | Monthly plan by calls | Free for 25 calls, then $3.00 a call; Pro from $150 a month for 75 calls; Enterprise from $500 |
| Retell AI | Pay-as-you-go per minute (developer platform) | $0.07 to $0.31 a minute depending on voice, model and telephony choices |
| DialerBee | Per agent seat plus AI minutes | $0.60 per started connected minute on managed AI, added to a Professional plan at $129 per agent a month; carrier minutes billed by your carrier |
| Ruby (human receptionists, for comparison) | Monthly plan with included minutes | $250 for 50 minutes; $395 for 100; $720 for 200; $1,725 for 500 |
Two things stand out. First, the units are different: minutes, calls and "unique customers" cannot be compared until you turn them into your own monthly volume. Second, the list price says little about what the receptionist actually does with the call. We come back to both below.
The Three Ways AI Receptionists Are Priced
1. Flat monthly plans with an allowance
You pay a fixed fee for a set number of minutes, calls or callers. This is the easiest to budget. Watch the edges: what one extra minute costs, whether you jump automatically to the next tier, and whether unused minutes carry over.
2. Per-minute pricing
You pay for the time the AI is on the line. This is fair when your calls vary in length: a 30-second "are you open today?" costs less than a 5-minute booking. Check how minutes are rounded. DialerBee, for example, bills per started connected minute, so a call of 2 minutes and 10 seconds counts as 3 minutes. Developer platforms with very low per-minute rates often bill voice, language model and telephony as separate items, and you build and maintain the receptionist yourself.
3. Per-call pricing
You pay a fixed amount for each answered call, whatever its length. It suits businesses with longer calls, but short calls such as wrong numbers and hang-ups become expensive. Ask whether spam and very short calls count towards your bill.
Some providers mix these: a platform or seat fee plus usage. That is how DialerBee works, because the AI receptionist runs inside a contact center that your staff also use.
Hidden Costs Most AI Receptionist Pricing Pages Leave Out
Before you sign, go through this list with every vendor, including us.
| Cost | What to ask | On DialerBee |
|---|---|---|
| Setup and onboarding | Is there a setup fee? Who writes the scripts and connects the calendar? | Standard self-service onboarding is included. Guided implementation or custom integrations may need a scoped services package. |
| Phone number | Is a number included? Can I keep my existing number? | Self-serve accounts connect their own SIP trunk or PBX. Without one, the number is set up for you through sales. |
| Carrier minutes | Are telephony minutes included, or billed separately? | Billed by your carrier, not marked up by DialerBee. |
| Overages and tier jumps | What does the first call over the allowance cost? | No allowance: every started connected minute is $0.60 on managed AI. |
| Billing increments | Per second, per minute rounded up, or a minimum per call? | Per started connected minute. |
| Integrations | Is calendar or CRM booking on my plan, or only on a higher tier? | Google Calendar and Microsoft 365 booking with a free-busy check, on the plan that carries the AI voice agent. |
| Human handoff | Where does a transferred call go, and who pays for that time? | To your own team in DialerBee's queues and agent desktop. You need at least one agent seat; the staff time is your cost. |
| Languages and messages | Do other languages or follow-up texts cost extra? | 11 languages, including Arabic dialects. SMS and WhatsApp follow-up are part of the platform; ask sales about message charges for your country. |
The biggest hidden cost is not on any invoice: staff time spent on calls the AI could not finish. A receptionist that answers every call but hands half of them to you, or takes a message instead of booking, moves work around rather than removing it.
AI Receptionist vs Human Receptionist: What Does Each Really Cost?
The US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a median wage for receptionists of $18.27 an hour, or $38,010 a year (BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook, May 2025 data). Employers also pay benefits: across US private industry, wages were 70.0% of total compensation in June 2026 (BLS Employer Costs for Employee Compensation). Applying that average share gives a rough loaded cost of $54,300 a year, about $4,525 a month, or $26.10 an hour. That is an estimate, not a receptionist-specific benefits figure, and it leaves out recruiting, training, cover for holidays and sick days, and desk space.
In the UK, the government's National Careers Service lists a typical receptionist salary of £21,000 to £25,000 for 37 to 40 hours a week (National Careers Service), before employer costs. In other markets, use local salary data for your city.
Here is the honest part most comparisons skip. At $26.10 an hour, a minute of an employed receptionist's time costs about $0.44. That is less than DialerBee's $0.60 AI minute. So if you already have a receptionist with spare time who answers every call, an AI receptionist will not cut the cost of those calls.
Where the AI wins is coverage:
- Hours. A full-time receptionist covers about 40 of the 168 hours in a week. Evenings, weekends and lunch breaks go to voicemail.
- Busy lines. A person answers one call at a time. When two calls arrive together, or the receptionist is helping someone at the desk, one caller waits or hangs up.
- Fixed cost. You pay the salary whether 20 or 400 calls come in. AI minutes rise and fall with your call volume.
A human receptionist still wins on greeting people in person, handling upset or unusual callers, and judgement. That is why most small businesses that adopt an AI receptionist use it alongside their staff, not instead of them. AI Receptionist vs Answering Service Cost
A live answering service puts a trained person on every call, usually billed by the minute or the call. Ruby, for example, lists $720 a month for 200 receptionist minutes, which works out at $3.60 a minute or about $7.20 for a 2-minute call (Ruby pricing, checked October 2026). That buys a human voice on every call, but whether the operator can book into your calendar or only take a message depends on the service and your setup.
An AI receptionist is typically far cheaper per minute than a live answering service, and it can work inside your own systems. We compare all three options, including IVR menus, in AI receptionist vs IVR vs answering service.
What an AI Receptionist Costs on DialerBee: Three Worked Examples
These examples use DialerBee's published prices from the pricing page: $0.60 per started connected minute for the AI voice agent on managed AI, and $129 per agent a month for a Professional seat, which the AI voice agent is added to. Everything else is an illustrative assumption, not a customer result:
- 2 billed AI minutes per call on average.
- Carrier minutes at $0.02 a minute on your own SIP trunk. Your carrier's rate will differ.
- 70% of calls resolved by the AI (booked, rescheduled or answered), 30% handed to a person, and 25 of every 30 handed-over calls resolved by staff. The rest are hang-ups or wrong numbers.
- Each handover takes 4 minutes of staff time at the $26.10 loaded hourly cost above, so $1.74 per handover.
| Monthly item | 100 calls solo practice | 300 calls busy salon or clinic | 1,000 calls multi-chair or multi-site |
|---|---|---|---|
| Billed AI minutes (2 per call) | 200 | 600 | 2,000 |
| AI voice agent at $0.60 a minute | $120 | $360 | $1,200 |
| Professional seats at $129 (for the people who take handovers) | 1 × $129 | 1 × $129 | 2 × $129 = $258 |
| DialerBee bill | $249 | $489 | $1,458 |
| Carrier minutes at $0.02 (billed by your carrier) | $4 | $12 | $40 |
| Staff time on handovers at $1.74 each | 30 × $1.74 = $52.20 | 90 × $1.74 = $156.60 | 300 × $1.74 = $522 |
| All-in monthly cost | $305.20 | $657.60 | $2,020 |
| Resolved calls (AI + after handover) | 70 + 25 = 95 | 210 + 75 = 285 | 700 + 250 = 950 |
| Cost per resolved call | $3.21 | $2.31 | $2.13 |
Seats are shown at monthly prices; annual billing saves 20% on them. Taxes are excluded. If you bring your own AI model keys, a flat monthly platform fee replaces the $0.60 per-minute rate and your model provider bills you directly; ask sales for that fee.
How to read this: at 100 calls a month, the seat is a large share of the bill, so cost per resolved call is highest. As volume grows, the seat is spread over more calls. For comparison, the same 300 calls answered by a full-time US receptionist at the loaded $4,525 a month works out to about $15 per call, although that receptionist also does other work, and none of the evening or weekend calls would be answered.
Why DialerBee Is Not the Cheapest Minute, and When That Still Pays
Run the 300-call example (600 minutes) through the published plans above and several are cheaper on paper: Rosie's 1,000-minute plan is $149, Goodcall's 500-customer plan is $129, and My AI Front Desk comes to $99 plus 400 extra minutes at $0.25, or $199. A developer platform such as Retell would charge roughly $42 to $186 for the minutes alone, before anyone builds the receptionist. DialerBee is $489 plus carrier minutes.
So why would anyone pay more? Because the monthly fee buys minutes, and what you need is resolved calls. On DialerBee, the AI receptionist is the AI voice agent, Layla, running inside a full contact center:
- It books, not just takes messages. It checks free-busy on your Google Calendar or Microsoft 365 calendar, then books, reschedules or cancels during the call, and only tells the caller it is done once the system confirms it.
- It answers from your documents. You upload policies and service information to a knowledge base, and it speaks only prices from your service catalogue rather than inventing one.
- It follows up. A confirmation or follow-up can go out by SMS or WhatsApp after the call, and reminders go out on the schedule you set.
- It hands off to your own team. Calls it should not handle go to a person in the same system, with queues, an agent desktop and an omnichannel inbox for voice, WhatsApp, SMS and email. Your Professional seat is also a full agent seat for inbound and outbound calls.
- It speaks 11 languages, including Arabic as dialects (Gulf, Levantine and Egyptian), which matters if your callers do not all speak English.
Every one of those is a call you or your staff do not have to finish later. If a cheaper service resolves fewer calls, its cost per resolved call can end up higher, even with a lower monthly fee. For the contact-center version of this maths, with handover costs at larger volumes, read AI voice agent pricing and cost per resolved call.
Choose a cheaper plan if…
- Your calls are simple and you mainly want every call answered at the lowest monthly price.
- You do not need bookings written into a shared calendar, follow-up messages or transfers into a team queue.
- You want a receptionist without per-agent seats, or you have engineers and want to build your own on a developer platform.
Choose DialerBee if…
- Most of your calls are bookings, changes and questions that should end with something done, not a message.
- You want the AI and your staff in one system, with the same queues, inbox and reports.
- Your callers speak Arabic or several languages, or you already run a SIP trunk or PBX.

How to Estimate Your Own AI Receptionist Cost in Five Steps
- Count your calls. Take last month's total from your phone system, including missed calls and after-hours calls.
- Measure call length. Use your average, then round up to whole minutes if the vendor bills per started minute.
- Price each vendor on that volume. Include the plan, overages, number, carrier minutes and any setup fee.
- Add handover time. Estimate how many calls will still need a person, and what that time costs you.
- Divide by resolved calls. Count only calls with a confirmed outcome. Then test it: a two-week trial on your own calls beats any estimate, including ours.
The AI receptionist ROI calculator does the missed-call side of this for you, and the AI receptionist page shows what DialerBee's receptionist handles and what it leaves to your team.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an AI receptionist cost per month?
Most small-business AI receptionist plans we checked in October 2026 list between about $49 and $300 a month for a set number of minutes or calls, with extra usage billed on top. Per-minute developer platforms start lower but leave the build to you. On DialerBee, 300 calls a month at 2 minutes each comes to $360 of AI minutes plus one $129 Professional seat, $489 a month before carrier minutes.
Is an AI receptionist cheaper than a human receptionist?
Usually, if you compare a monthly bill with a salary. A US receptionist at the BLS median wage costs roughly $4,525 a month once benefits are added, and covers about 40 of the 168 hours in a week. But a minute of an employed receptionist's time can cost less than an AI minute, so the real saving comes from calls nobody was free to answer, not from replacing a person who is already answering them.
Is per-minute or per-call pricing better for a small business?
Per-call pricing suits short, predictable calls. Per-minute pricing suits a mix of short and long calls, because a 30-second wrong number costs less than a 6-minute booking. Flat plans with included minutes are easiest to budget, as long as you know what happens when you go over the allowance.
What hidden costs come with an AI receptionist?
Check setup or onboarding fees, phone number and carrier charges, overage rates and tier jumps, how minutes are rounded, whether spam calls count, limits on calendar and CRM connections, extra fees for languages or text messages, and the staff time spent taking transferred calls.
Why does DialerBee cost more per minute than some AI receptionists?
DialerBee's $0.60 per started connected minute is not the lowest headline rate. It is the AI voice agent inside a full contact center: it books after checking your real calendar, speaks only prices from your catalogue, answers from your documents, follows up by SMS or WhatsApp and hands callers to your team in the same system. Compare the cost per resolved call, not the minute rate alone.
Do I need my own phone number or SIP trunk?
For self-serve sign-up on DialerBee, yes: you connect your own SIP trunk or PBX, and your carrier bills its minutes directly. If you do not have one, DialerBee sets up the phone number for you through sales.
Can I try an AI receptionist before paying?
DialerBee has a 14-day free trial with no credit card for teams with their own SIP trunk or PBX. You can also listen to demo calls first, or book a demo and have the number set up for you.
How do I work out the cost per resolved call?
Add up the AI charges, platform or seat fees, carrier minutes and the staff time spent on handed-over calls for one month. Divide by the number of calls that ended with a confirmed outcome, such as a booking written to the calendar or a question answered without a callback.
The Bottom Line
An AI receptionist is usually far cheaper than a full-time hire or a live answering service, and the cheapest plan is not always the cheapest outcome. Price every option on your real call volume, add the costs the pricing page leaves out, and compare the cost per resolved call. If you want the AI to book, answer from your documents, follow up by WhatsApp or SMS and hand off to your team in one system, book a demo and we will set up the number for you, or start a 14-day free trial with your own SIP trunk. Full prices are on the pricing page.
