Quick answer

AI voice agents are billed per minute, per call, by subscription, or a mix of platform and usage fees, so the cheapest advertised minute is not always the cheapest outcome. Compare providers on the fully loaded cost per verified resolution: AI and carrier charges, platform fees and human handovers, divided by the customer issues actually resolved. DialerBee's AI voice agent is $0.60 per started connected minute on managed AI, added to a Professional or Enterprise plan. This guide shows the formula, a worked example, a calculator, a 30-day pilot plan and the questions to ask vendors.

Search for AI voice agent pricing, AI receptionist cost or AI call center software pricing and you usually get one answer: a rate per minute. But minutes do not tell you whether a customer booked an appointment, got the right answer or had to call back. A two-minute call that fails is not cheaper than a three-minute call that solves the problem.

The right buying question is not "how much does AI talk cost?" It is "what does a confirmed, acceptable outcome cost, and how does that compare with how we work today?" Answer it before you sign a contract.

What Does an AI Voice Agent Really Cost?

A complete budget has seven parts:

Cost componentWhat to check before you buy
AI conversationPer-minute fee, rounding rules, minimum billable duration, model and voice options
TelephonyInbound and outbound carrier charges, SIP trunks, number rental, transfers and destination rates
Contact center softwareSeat fees, queues and IVR, supervisor tools, and whether AI is billed as a separate add-on
Setup and integrationsCRM, calendars, knowledge base, API actions, testing and change management
Human interventionTime spent taking transfers, correcting failures and following up
Operations and qualityMonitoring, transcript review, language testing and escalation ownership
Risk and governanceConsent, recording notices, security review, retention, fallback and incident response

One vendor may include speech recognition and synthesis in a single rate while another bills each through separate providers. Some platforms let you bring your own SIP carrier or model keys; others bundle them. Compare the same call volume, destinations, call length, language mix and definition of success, and check each vendor's current pricing page or contract rather than a blog post, because prices and packaging change.

The Metric That Matters: Cost per Verified Resolution

A verified resolution is an outcome confirmed by a system of record or a reviewable event: a booking actually written to the calendar, an order status returned from the order system, a service request closed correctly, or an issue completed by a person after a transfer. An AI saying "done" is not evidence that the task happened.

Cost per verified resolution = (AI minutes × AI rate + carrier minutes × carrier rate + fixed monthly fees + human handover cost) ÷ verified resolutions.

Track it alongside first-contact resolution, repeat contacts within seven days, customer satisfaction, correct-transfer rate, latency, complaints and opt-outs. Lowering the cost by refusing to transfer frustrated callers is not an improvement.

Define the denominator in advance. Count each customer issue once. Do not count voicemail, silent calls, abandoned conversations, unconfirmed bookings or the same customer calling back tomorrow as extra resolutions.

Worked Example: 5,000 AI-Handled Calls in One Month

This example uses DialerBee's published prices for the AI voice agent and Professional seats. Every other number is an illustrative assumption, not a customer result, a benchmark or a guaranteed saving. Replace them with your own data, or use the calculator below.

Monthly inputValue
Calls handled by the AI voice agent5,000
Average billed AI minutes per call (illustrative)2.4
DialerBee AI voice agent rate (published)$0.60 per minute
Carrier rate on your own trunk (illustrative)$0.02 per minute
Professional seats for the agents who take handovers3 × $129
Calls handed to a person (illustrative)800
Human cost per handover (illustrative)$3.50
Issues verified resolved by the AI (illustrative)3,000
Issues verified resolved after handover (illustrative)600

Step 1, AI minutes: 5,000 calls × 2.4 minutes = 12,000 minutes. 12,000 × $0.60 = $7,200.

Step 2, carrier minutes: 12,000 × $0.02 = $240, billed by your carrier.

Step 3, seats: 3 × $129 = $387.

Step 4, handovers: 800 × $3.50 = $2,800. The 200 transfers that were not resolved still cost money.

Step 5, total: $7,200 + $240 + $387 + $2,800 = $10,627.

Step 6, verified outcomes: 3,000 + 600 = 3,600 of 5,000 calls, a 72% verified resolution rate. The other 1,400 calls are not counted as resolved.

Cost per verified resolution = $10,627 ÷ 3,600 = $2.95. If some of the 1,400 unresolved calls need paid follow-up later, add that cost before claiming a full saving.

For comparison, a hypothetical human-only team costing $3.50 for each of the same 5,000 calls and resolving the same 3,600 issues would cost $17,500 ÷ 3,600 = $4.86 per verified resolution. That is a model, not observed evidence: salaried staff costs do not fall in step with call volume, and service levels and call mix change the answer. Do not book the difference as cash savings without an operating plan.

DialerBee bills AI minutes per started connected minute, so use billed minutes, not raw talk time, when you estimate. If you bring your own model keys, a flat monthly fee replaces the per-minute AI rate; ask sales for it.

Why a Cheap Minute Can Become an Expensive Outcome

Imagine two set-ups handling the same mix of calls. System A charges $0.08 a minute but resolves 45% of calls and often needs callbacks. System B charges $0.13 a minute but resolves 72% and transfers difficult cases accurately. If their calls last the same time, comparing $0.08 with $0.13 misses the much bigger effect of resolution quality. This is a hypothetical illustration, not a ranking of real providers.

Audit five failure patterns: repeated "I didn't understand" loops; slow replies that make callers hang up; invented prices or appointment slots that do not exist; transfers without the transcript or customer context; and conversations that sound successful while the booking or update fails behind the scenes. Each one adds cost and complaints.

Which AI Calling Model Should You Buy?

ApproachFits best whenWatch out for
AI voice APIYou are building your own voice product and have engineersYou own routing, monitoring, recovery and most integrations
Standalone AI receptionistYou need narrow tasks such as answering, basic qualification and bookingsTransfers, reporting and contact history may sit outside your contact center
AI-native contact centerAI must work beside queues, human agents, outbound campaigns, CRM and supervisorsConfirm add-on pricing, what is live today and role permissions
Human-first agent assistCalls are complex or sensitive and agents need summaries and guidanceBenefits show up in handle time and quality rather than in automated resolutions

For a deeper comparison, read AI voice API vs AI contact center platform. You do not need to automate every conversation to see a benefit: automating well-bounded tasks usually beats chasing a "100% autonomous" target.

Seven Use Cases and the Outcome to Measure

  1. Appointment-based businesses: a slot written to the scheduling system, not a spoken promise. Track no-shows and wrong bookings.
  2. Customer support: order status fetched from an authorised source. Track repeat contacts and wrong answers.
  3. After-hours reception: intent captured and urgent cases routed. Track next-day completion, not just answered calls.
  4. Sales qualification: a consented lead saved with the right fields. Track valid meetings that sales accepts.
  5. Collections reminders: identity verified, calling and consent rules respected, disputes escalated to people. Track completed compliant outcomes, not call volume.
  6. Multilingual service: native speakers, local accents, code-switching, names and numbers tested. Track results per language, not one blended rate.
  7. BPOs and resellers: each client isolated in its own tenant, with cost and quality measured per client, campaign and carrier.

How DialerBee Prices the AI Voice Agent

DialerBee combines inbound queues, outbound campaigns, an omnichannel inbox and AI voice agents in one browser workspace. On the pricing page, Starter is $69 per agent per month, Professional is $129 and Enterprise is custom. The AI voice agent, Layla, is a usage-billed add-on on Professional and Enterprise at $0.60 per started connected minute on managed AI. If you bring your own model keys, your model provider bills you directly and a flat monthly platform fee applies instead. Carrier minutes are billed by your carrier, and self-serve accounts connect their own SIP trunk or PBX.

Layla is set up in Agent Studio with a knowledge base, guardrails, versions and human handoff, answers only with prices from your catalogue, and books after checking availability. Listen to demo calls, try the AI receptionist ROI calculator, or book a demo to test your own call flows.

The 30-Day Pilot That Turns a Demo into Evidence

Days 1–5, baseline: pick one or two low-risk intents. Export recent call volume, cost, handle time, transfers, first-contact resolution, callbacks and satisfaction. Write down what counts as a verified resolution, and set up the consent and recording notices you need.

Days 6–10, integrate and stress-test: connect telephony, knowledge sources, calendar or CRM and human routing. Test no available slot, price changes, interruptions, several languages, sensitive requests, no agent available, network failures and a supervisor kill switch.

Days 11–20, limited cohort: route a controlled share of traffic to the AI. Audit a sample of recordings and back-end outcomes, compare by intent, language and contact type, and include the full cost of unresolved calls and transfers.

Days 21–30, decide with a scorecard: scale only if the AI meets the thresholds you set for verified resolution, accuracy, satisfaction, safe escalation and fully loaded cost. Keep a rollback route and a named owner for exceptions. If it falls short, narrow the use case or stop.

Twelve Questions for Your AI Voice Agent RFP

  1. What starts and stops a billable minute, and is time rounded up?
  2. Are speech recognition, models, voices, outbound telephony and transfers included?
  3. Can we use our existing SIP provider and numbers, and is anything marked up?
  4. Can a caller reach a person straight away, with the full conversation context?
  5. How is a booking or CRM update confirmed before the agent says it succeeded?
  6. What are latency, interruption handling and failure recovery like in our languages?
  7. Are consent, recording, retention and access settings configurable by jurisdiction?
  8. Can we export transcripts, outcomes, per-call usage and audit records?
  9. Is tenant isolation available, so each BPO client sees only its own records?
  10. Can supervisors pause one agent, one campaign or all AI calls immediately?
  11. Which capabilities are live today, which need implementation and which are on the roadmap?
  12. What does a quote look like for 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000 minutes a month on our real destinations?

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does an AI voice agent cost per minute?

There is no single market rate: some quotes cover only orchestration, others include speech, models or telephony. DialerBee's AI voice agent is $0.60 per started connected minute on managed AI, added to a Professional or Enterprise plan, with carrier minutes billed by your carrier. Compare vendors on total cost per verified resolution, not on the minute rate alone.

Is an AI receptionist cheaper than a human receptionist?

It can be for bounded, repeatable tasks, especially when calls would otherwise go unanswered. The saving depends on resolution rate, transfers, AI and carrier charges, staffing and supervision. Compare like-for-like outcomes rather than counting calls answered.

Can AI voice agents replace a contact center?

Not as a universal rule. Complex, disputed, sensitive or unusual cases need people. A practical design lets AI answer approved questions and complete permitted actions, while human agents keep escalation and oversight.

Does a cheaper AI minute mean a better ROI?

No. Resolution quality, latency, repeat contacts, handover efficiency and total contract cost can outweigh a small difference in the minute rate. Measure a real pilot and define success before the test starts.

What languages should we test?

Every language you plan to deploy, including dialects, code-switching, names and numbers. DialerBee supports 11 languages, but acceptance criteria should be set per call flow and per language.

Is this article a quote or a compliance guarantee?

No. Apart from DialerBee's published prices, every figure is an illustrative planning assumption. Ask sales for a written quote for your traffic, and note that compliance-supporting features do not replace legal review in your jurisdiction.

The Takeaway: Buy Confirmed Outcomes, Not Minutes

Start with one measurable, safe, auditable customer journey. Write down your assumptions, test in every language you will use, track unresolved work and keep human handoff. That gives finance a defensible comparison, operations a dashboard they can act on, and customers a reason to stay on the line.
